How to Measure for a Dog Sling in 60 Seconds (Plus How to Size One as a Gift)

Quick answer: A dog sling is sized to the person, not the dog. Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, just under the armpits, over the clothes you will wear it with. Match the number to the chart: XS 28–32 in, S 32–36, M 36–40, L 40–44, XL 44–48, XXL 48–52. Between sizes, size up. Then one check for the dog: 6 kg (13.2 lbs) or under. That is the whole process, and it takes about 60 seconds. Buying as a gift? Skip to the section below on sizing someone else without asking.

Why we size the wearer, not the dog

A sling is worn like a crossbody bag. The pouch is the same on every size and comfortably fits any dog up to 13.2 lbs, whether a 3-lb Chihuahua or a 12-lb Miniature Dachshund, because the fabric stretches around the dog. What changes between sizes is only the strap length, which decides where the pouch sits on your body. Too long and the dog rides at your hip, swinging with each step. Too short and the strap cuts in. Right, and the dog sits high on your chest where you can look down and see their face. The full size chart is here; this post is about getting the measurement right.

How to measure yourself in 60 seconds

  • Step 1: wear what you will wear. A T-shirt in summer, your usual jacket in winter. If you plan to wear the sling over a heavy coat, measure over the coat.

  • Step 2: find the fullest part of your chest. For most people that is just under the armpits, across the bust or the widest part of the ribcage.

  • Step 3: wrap and read. Tape parallel to the floor, snug but not pulling. Breathe normally. Read the number in inches.

  • Step 4: match the chart. 34 in = S. 40 in = exactly on the M/L line, so take L. 47 in = XL.

No tape measure? Lay a shirt that fits you well on a flat surface, measure armpit to armpit with a ruler or phone, and double it. Or use a piece of string and a ruler. Or skip the math entirely and use the 30-second Size Finder, which asks two questions and gives you the size.

The five most common sizing mistakes

  • Ordering by the dog's weight. The number one cause of exchanges. The dog's weight only matters for the 13.2-lb limit.

  • Measuring the waist. The strap crosses your chest and shoulder. Chest measurement only.

  • Sizing down to "keep the dog closer." A strap that is too short pulls on the shoulder and makes it hard to load the dog. The pouch sits high enough at the correct size.

  • Forgetting the winter coat. A puffer jacket can add 4 to 6 inches to your chest measurement. If you are between sizes and live somewhere cold, size up.

  • Sharing one sling between two very different bodies. It works if you size to the larger person; the smaller person wears it slightly lower. If the gap is more than two sizes, two slings are happier.

Sizing a dog sling as a gift (without asking)

This is the month for it. You probably know the person's clothing size, and that is enough to get close. The table below is a guide, not a rule, because clothing sizes vary by brand; when in doubt, choose the larger of the two options, because exchanges are free within 30 days and a slightly roomy sling is more comfortable than a tight one.

  • Women's XS–S (US 0–6), chest about 31–35 in: XS or S. Choose S unless they are very petite.

  • Women's M (US 8–10), chest about 35–38 in: S or M. Choose M.

  • Women's L–XL (US 12–16), chest about 39–44 in: M or L. Choose L.

  • Women's XXL+ (US 18+), chest 44 in and up: XL or XXL.

  • Men's S (chest 34–36 in): S. Men's M (38–40): M or L; choose L. Men's L (42–44): L or XL; choose XL. Men's XL (46–48): XL or XXL; choose XXL.

Two more gift checks: the dog must be 13.2 lbs or under (ask casually what the vet said at the last visit), and pick the color the person wears, not the dog's color. Classic Black goes with everything; Baby Pink, Mint and Purple are for people who already own something in that color.

How to check the fit when it arrives

  • Height: with the dog in the pouch, the dog's head should be roughly at the level of your lower ribs or higher. You should be able to look down and see their eyes.

  • Strap: lies flat across the chest and over the opposite shoulder, no twisting, no digging. You can slip two fingers under it.

  • Dog posture: seated or curled with the legs tucked, chest and rear supported, back level. Close both safety lock buttons and attach the inner clasp to the harness.

  • Walk test: walk 50 steps. The pouch should move with your torso, not swing like a pendulum. If it swings, the strap is too long; go down a size.

The dog's side of the fit

One measurement: weight. The Kangapooch is designed and third-party load-tested for dogs up to 6 kg (13.2 lbs): 10,000 lift cycles at 10 lbs and a 24-hour static hold at 30 lbs. Over 13.2 lbs, we recommend a structured carrier, honestly, for your dog's safety and yours. Length and coat do not change anything; the pouch stretches around a long Dachshund body or a fluffy Pomeranian the same way. A harness with a D-ring is needed for the inner clasp; collars are not safe to clip to.

Frequently asked questions

I'm exactly on the line between two sizes. Which one?

Size up. The strap sits best with a little room, and loading the dog is easier.

What if I guessed wrong for a gift?

Size exchanges are free within 30 days of delivery for an unused sling with tags attached, and the replacement ships out on us. Details are on the Returns and Exchanges page. Unused, unopened gifts also fall within the exchange window, so the recipient can swap after the holidays.

Does the sling adjust at all?

The six sizes replace adjustment buckles, which is part of why it weighs 6.6 oz (187 g) and has nothing to slip or rattle. Choose the right size and it will sit the same way every time.

How long will shipping take for a gift?

Orders ship from our Tokyo studio in 1 to 2 business days and typically arrive in the U.S. in 4 to 10 days, with tracking, and import duties included in the price. For December delivery, ordering by December 10 gives the most comfortable margin.

Bottom line

Chest measurement, chart, size up if in doubt, dog under 13.2 lbs. Sixty seconds, and the sling sits where it should on day one. The Kangapooch is crafted in Japan, vet-reviewed, backed by a 5-year warranty, and has been sized this way since 2009.
